Cloud Cost Optimization Without the Pain

Five repeatable plays for cutting cloud spend without slowing teams down or pulling engineers off feature work.

Most cloud bills grow because nobody owns them. The most effective cost programs do not start with reserved instances or commitment plans. They start with visibility and accountability.

1. Tag Everything

If you cannot attribute a dollar to a team, you cannot have a productive conversation about reducing it. Make tagging policy code, not paperwork.

2. Kill Zombies

Idle volumes, unattached load balancers, orphaned snapshots: every account has them. Schedule a quarterly sweep.

3. Right-Size in Real Time

Most workloads are over-provisioned. Use observability data to set sane defaults and let autoscaling handle the rest.

4. Commit Wisely

Reserved capacity is a discount, not a strategy. Commit only to the steady-state baseline you are confident in.

5. Make Cost a Product Metric

Engineers will optimize what they see. Expose cost-per-feature dashboards alongside your usual reliability metrics.
